Glued Vacuum Tubes - June 19, 2008

I continued working on the air intake pipe after joining the main pipe pieces. I went to home depot and got two small copper pipes two use for connecting the two vacuum hoses that go into the intake pipe. One pipe needs to have an outer diameter of about 8 mm, and the other must be about 14 mm to fit the vacuum hoses. One of the copper pipes I got was a 90 degree elbow to make it easier to connect one of the hoses without much modification.

  1. I cut about an inch-long piece of the 8 mm pipe to use for one of the vacuum hoses.

  2. I marked where to cut the hole in the intake pipe for the small vacuum pipe and cut out the hole with a dremel.

  3. In the same way, I made a hole for the larger vacuum pipe.

  4. I sanded all of the surfaces to be glued with 80-grit followed by 320-grit sandpaper and then cleaned the surfaces with Simple Green followed by acetone.
  5. Then, I applied JB Weld to the outside edge of each copper pipe and inserted each pipe into its corresponding hole.

  6. I allowed 24 hours for the pipe to dry. The picture shows the final result.
